Black Eyed Peas

I picked a huge mess of blackeyed peas today and will be shelling them on the patio this afternoon.  I can't believe we are still getting peas this late in the season.  Hey, I'm not going to fuss about that though!  We both LOVE them.

I also love the fact that if I don't get them picked soon enough to shell "fresh" I can just let them dry and we have.... yep.... dried blackeyed peas!

I don't know if you recall, but I have been having some problems with the seed I planted in September.
Out of a bed aprox. 4x16 I planted turnips.  From those seeds I got 9 turnips started.  Very disappointing.  I have replanted in two other beds with no luck.  At the same time I planted some lettuce, spinach and cabbage.  All that resulted from that was one lonely lettuce plant.

Today I was out picking peas and noticed that there were 10 little lettuce plants poking out of the dirt!  I guess it wasn't a total wash after all.

  1. Love the fact you have lots of things still coming in. We picked butter beans galore yesterday. I love picking...it's like an easter egg hunt only they are everywhere. lol We enjoy our garden.

  2. Good for you, Sci. I love black-eye peas too. I grew them once back in the late 70's. If there were pods too tiny to be worth shelling, I would break them in half and throw them in with the shelled peas. Black-eye peas and snaps ...yum! I am Still trying to convince YOF, but he'll come around. I really think the extreme heat we had last summer was a big factor in thwarting your last seed planting efforts. A little rain, a little more moderate temperatures and your lettuce is sprouting. Good for you!

We found a good deal on some freestone peach trees yesterday ($23 each, 6-7 ft trees) and will be putting two of those in the ground next month. The girl at the co-op was very knowledgeable and said we would have SOME peaches next year, but after that ...we will have all the peaches we want! Also planted some onion sets yesterday.

  3. LOL Sonya, Easter egg hunt! I like that! I never thought of it like that before.

Hoss, you will win on the legume game one day. I have faith in ya!
What a great deal on the peach trees! I see peach pies in YOF's future!
