Preppers Podcast

For those that didn't catch it over at the Kentucky Preppers Network , I participated in the first Prepper Podcast. It truly was a nice experience and Matt is doing a great job over there. Also on the podcast we had Tom from the American Preppers Network and Ernie from the Indiana Preppers Network. If somehow you haven't checked out these sites....your missing out! Great information for each and everyone of us!

We are doing dinner "out" tonite. DH has the pit fired up and is going to put a rack of pork ribs on. I've got a mess of blackeyed peas cooking on the "canner" stove. That would be the one out on the patio as it is still way to hot to cook for too long inside. Once the peas are done I am making some boiled fresh squash with onions and after that.... we have just enough okra to do a couple of servings of fried okra! Along with the very last of the chili bread it ought to be quite a feast! I wonder what the rich people are eating tonight!

Chili Bread's Ready!

As usual my days off are for catching up! Housework, laundry, ya know- same stuff different week. I've got onions in the dehydrator that STILL aren't done. I wish they would hurry up because I'm itching to try my hand at dehydrated eggs. I got tired of waiting for Dean from AZ to post his "how-to" and did a little searching. I'll let ya'll know how that turns out.(if the danged onions ever get finished!)

I made another loaf of chili bread yesterday. OMGOSH that stuff is addicting. I'm back on track with my bread making again after having fallen off the wagon last week and buying my first store bought bread in months. I have to say its a bit "lacking" in taste and texture after eating homemade for so long!

I am not sure what is going on out in the gardens. I planted a bunch of stuff about 3 1/2 weeks ago. The squash is coming up just fine. And the tomato plants are looking good. So far there are a few turnips sprouting and ONE lettuce plant. I think I might have planted things a little too deep. That and the heat haven't helped much at all. If the west garden is still looking like this next week I intend to replant. So far none of the cabbage, brussel sprouts or spinach has made an appearance.

Still on my to do list for the day is putting up some pickled okra. Another first for me but I'm sure it will turn out fine. One thing I have learned over the past few months with food preservation is DONT BE SCARED! Just jump out there and try it! Most of the time it all works out like it is supposed to. I am actually looking forward to fall tomato canning! We only got 14 pints from the spring tomato's. That was disappointing but hey.... I'll live!

Fast Food Folk Song

I couldn't resist this one!

Sunday, August 23, 2009

It has been so hot here. The drought continues, with no end in sight. It has been a strange year. Most of the people I have talked to and read blogs from have had one of the strangest summers in recent history. Super wet in the north and super dry in the south.

Lot's of gardens apparently didn't fair well. I know ours really didn't produce.Even the okra, which loves hot weather, has had minimal output this year. We had no luck at all with the corn. A few ears is all we got. The corn bores got to it before it was fully mature. I have heard alot of other people have had corn problems as well.

Our best crop was squash by far. We canned over 40 quarts and froze a few pounds too. I only managed to get 14 pints of tomato's this spring season as opposed to last years 30. I am hoping the fall tomato's will do better.
I planted turnips, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, brussel sprouts and winter squash almost three weeks ago. The only thing that has sprouted up is the squash. I figured it was because it was so hot and dry. We water daily as we are on well water and can afford to do so.

The armadillo's have been rooting in the west garden so I am not sure anything is even going to come up. If not, I will replant next week. We have a really long growing season here so we should have a little leeway. I hope so anyway!

I have had no luck in finding seed potato's this fall even though we can plant them here this time of year. I was thinking about going to Whole Foods and finding some organic potato's to try. Apparently the ones we planted in the spring were GMO. Anyone think this might work? I'm going to give it a shot anyway. It can't hurt to try right? I still haven't given up the idea that the potato's in a sack idea will work! Dang it if Kymbers can grow potato's I want some too!!

I have a confession to make. I broke down last week and bought a loaf of bread last week. The first one I have bought since finding the bread machine several months ago. I almost feel like I have cheated! Go figure. It's ok though.... I only bought one! LOL. I have a loaf in the machine as we speak! I'm going to make another loaf of chili bread when I get home from work tonite. I haven't made one in over a week and that's not flying well with the DH!

Well I have to get ready for work so I will catch up with all of you guys later. Have a great day. My suggestion for the day is..... Call someone you love today. Just pick up the phone. You could make someones day brighter and you will be all the happier for it too. Trust me, you will.

Bill and the Bumper Sticker

Our neighbor ( I'll call him Bill) is probably one of the most interesting sheeple I have ever met. He loves to talk politics. The problem is he only garners about half of what he hears. He's one of those "older gentlemen" who like to spout off what he has seen on CNN and the like. There have been more conversations between the DH and Bill than I can count. Most end up with Bill getting mad and leaving. He's a democrat and couldn't stand Bush. (Those were some exciting talks!) Especially with all the facts DH was tosssing at him.
He cannot understand that the government would or could possibly NOT have our best interest at heart. We have talked till blue in the face, printed out documents, shown him video's. You name it ....we have tried it! I thought the man would have a heart attack when we started talking to him about 9/11 being an inside job. I hate to admit it but sometimes the DH or I would bring up facts just to get him riled up! LOL What can I say! Just trying to wake him up, right?

When we ordered the Alex Jones DVD THE OBAMA DECEPTION they sent us 2 bumper stickers with the disc. One of them was "9/11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB" Well, DH being the smarta$$ that he can be, took that sticker and put it on Bill's car. It was on there for a couple of months before he noticed it! To this day, he hasn't figured out who might have slapped that sticker on his car!

Sheeple!
