French Vanilla Coffee Creamer (DIY)

Most of us can't get ourselves motivated in the morning without a cup of coffee or three. I take mine with cream and sugar.  I also really like some of the flavored creamers that are out there.  Me being cheap.... errr... frugal means that I just won't spend the extra money on those expensive flavored creamers.  So when I ran across this recipe for making my own French Vanilla Creamer I just had to try it. I happened to have a can of sweetened condensed milk in the cupboard I'd picked up for making a batch of ice cream. I then kept forgetting the heavy cream and no ice cream was made.

A couple of things here.  I tried this as written and I didn't care for it one little bit. I added more milk (Like to the rim of the jar) I used some Vanilla Coffee Syrup the first time.  It was wayyy to sweet.

I should have let Mikey try it, he likes everything. (For those too young to remember - there was a commercial for Life cereal  a few years ago  "Let Mikey try it, he likes everything")  Good grief I feel older than dirt for having to explain that one.!

 Back to you Jane..... :-)

I would recommend using the vanilla extract instead of the syrup.  It's much better and besides this recipe is already pretty sweet because of the condensed milk. You might even want to add more milk. I think next time I'll make my own sweetened condensed milk as it's pretty simpe to make too.
I had to make this a couple of times, playing with the measurements but for all this build-up its a recipe as easy as it gets.

Here's the original link
And here's mine

You'll need
14oz sweetened condensed milk
2 cups milk (any kind will do)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract OR Vanilla Coffee Syrup(if you like it ultra sweet try using the syrup)
1 quart mason jar

Pour it all in a  mason jar and shake shake shake.
Add it to your coffee!  How simple is that?

So there you have it. I can't afford to buy fancy creamers for my coffee but when I can find the condensed milk on sale I'll sure grab a couple of cans and whip up some fancy coffee creamer!  You can also make a host of different flavors using this as a base.  You might even want to add more milk.   Or dream up your own! I think next time I'll make my own sweetened condensed milk as it's pretty simple too.

Here's a link for some ideas.

Who knows....one day I might make some ice cream too.

  1. What a good idea, I think much better than the dry kind. Ever since I saw how you can make a bomb out of it, I never wanted to drink it. So this is so much better. Easy too. That is amazing.

  3. My husband likes vanilla-flavored coffee, too. He's down to adding vanilla extract (not artificial), spoonful of local honey and a splash of cream. Less sugar that way. It smells wonderful, tho I like my coffee strong and black.

    1. S.Lynn that sounds yummy. Did you know you can find a pure vanilla powder? The Asian store I sometimes shop at carries it. It's really good.

  4. Oh how I was hoping that recipe was for the powdered creamer. I hate cooling my coffee off with something from the fridge. Back when I was on the fire department, all the men drank their coffee black. So that was THE WAY to do it. I would make them cringe when I filled 1/3 of my cup with powdered coffee creamer. (It looked like dumplings until I could get it to dissolve) Does it mean you're not a true coffee drinker when you get it to taste yummy....but a little thick?

    1. I've always been a fan of powdered creamer. Matter of fact I've got a couple of containers of it in the pantry. I saw this recipe though and just had to try it.

Our old coffee maker doesn't make HOT coffee anymore, sort of warmish hot so I always zap my cup in the microwave anyway. This was an experiment but I just might switch over. It would probably be cheaper than the powdered creamer though. Like you, I've always put a TON of powdered creamer in my coffee. I'll go through 3 bottles (containers?) in a month. I'll have to see just how much I'll use of this new stuff. I sure do like it though. And it doesn't have any of the unpronounceable ingredients in it as an added bonus.

    2. Depending on what type of coffeemaker you have, try running some white vinegar through it. The little elements get crusty after a while and don't truly touch the water to heat it up. But I'm sure you've tried it.

  5. Oh! I bet I could make some rockin' almond creamer! I love the Mikey reference btw. Now I need to go google and see exactly what Jane Pauley is up to. Ah- the fun I have on a Friday night! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  6. Have you ever tried those International coffee's that come in little cans with red lids? That's good coffee, and in a lot of flavors. I'm too cheap to buy it so my 86 year old mom sends it to me from California in care packages!

    1. Ohhhhh I just LOVE those International coffees. Like you though I'm to cheap.....errr;;;frugal to buy them any more. Bless your mom, what a nice thing to include in a care package.

  7. If you have ever read the ingredients in those coffee creamers, you may be saving your health by making your own. I don't drink coffee ever, but it would have to be black.

    1. I'll agree those creamers have tons of nasty ingredients in them. Mars reminds me of it all the time too. If I had to drink coffee black I would just stop drinking it. Must have creamer in it. I'm comfortable with this recipe though because I can pronounce everything that's in it.

  8. I laughed out loud about your explanation of the Mikey reference and how it made you feel to HAVE to explain it. I am old enough to remember it, too. :)

I love this recipe. The only recipe I have ever seen for coffee creamer is the powdered stuff. And, ugh, I don't like that stuff, even thought lotta joy does. (I am glad she likes it. It's just not for me.)

I think I may just have to make some of this to keep in the fridge.

    1. Christy I'm afraid that knowing Mikey dates us for sure. But I really do think that if you try it you'll like it. Everyone's taste buds are different. (which is why I thought the original recipe was sort of nasty) But me being me I didn't want to toss out the whole concoction I just started adding milk till I got the flavor I was looking for.

    3. Well thank you. I know I'm going to be doing some experimenting with this recipe as well. Like lottajoy, I've almost always used the powdered creamer. And A LOT of it. I like this well enough to make the switch.
Thanks for stopping by. Don't be a stranger. There are cookies in the cookie jar and coffee on the stove. Oh! The creamers in the fridge. Make yourself at home.

  9. SCI,

I remember that commercial, and loved it.
In fact, I'm always referring to Tank as Mikey, lol

Great idea, thank you for posting how to make the creamer. This is a recipe I will keep (Your Version).

    1. So Tank's the guinea pig huhh? From some of the things you've shared with us my guess is he's got no problems being like Mikey!
I should tell you that if you think the creamer is still too "sweet" just add a little more milk to it. It does look like I can either start making my own condensed milk or start adding it to the shopping list.
      Hugs to you and your's,
      Sci

  10. The commercial actually says "he won't eat it, he hates everything!" Then the other children are surprised that he actually does like it. Don't feel old, I'm only in my 20s and I know that commercial (along with dove, peppermint party, and various other commercials that my mom taught me when I was young).

    1. First I will apologize for not remembering the commercial correctly. Ok now that that is out of the way.
It is apparent to me that while your mother was teaching you COMMERCIALS when you were young she failed to teach you any social skills dealing with politeness.

  11. I played around with making my own creamer. In the process discovered that if I use real cream in my coffee I use quite a bit less than if I used the flavored stuff. An extra half spoonfull of sugar in the coffee since the cream's not sweetened fixed that problem, and a drop or two of vanilla extract and presto. Plus although the container of cream costs more than a similerly sized container of flavored creamer I'm using half as much so it lasts me longer.

    1. I would love to be able to afford real cream but around here a pint of cream was close to $4 the last time I looked. I've used cream in the past and I just love it. The problem is that it seems like I go through that much in 5-6 days. That makes it way out of my budget. Another thing I like about the DIY creamer is that I will be able to stock up on it when I find it on sale.
The real neat thing would be to find a local dairy and be able to afford raw milk and real cream. Yummm,,,,
