Preservitis- A New Disorder Identified?

(Re-post from 2010 SciFiChick@baconandeggs)

There is a newly recognized disorder that has come to the attention of folks across the country.  Although this disorder has been around for many years, it now has an identifiable name. That name is Preservitis. Symptoms include, but are not limited to the uncontrollable urge to can, dehydrate, freeze or otherwise preserve every fruit and vegetable that come across the path of the affected individual.  This disorder may become more intense as the summer season winds to a close.  Person's with this affliction have also been known to try unconventional recipes so as to save every known part of said fruits and vegetables.

There is no known cure for this disorder at this time.  The prescribed treatment is to let the symptoms run their course.  To alleviate symptoms, it is recommended to allow the affected individuals to pursue their urges to can, dehydrate freeze foods until the symptoms have dissipated.  It appears that once they have found that all fruits and vegetables have been attended to, the affected individuals return to a semi-normal state of mind. Studies have shown that symptoms will usually ease off as the summer winds to a close.

WARNING-  In most patients these urges WILL return year after year. Researchers believe that Preservitis will become more prevalent as society begins to sense a growing need for self-sustained living.

  1. Thanks for putting a name to this disorder that has plagued me for well over 50 years! I am here to testify that Preservitis is also contagious. I caught it from my mother and have passed it on to a couple of my children and grandchildren, who have a less severe form of the disorder. They can just tomatoes, salsa and pickles.

  2. I Love this post. How wonderful would it be if we all did this, think how much $ would be saved nation wide and, the added benefit of no GMO's! I'm thrilled to see these skills be revived!

  3. LOL, I know the feeling! Both my fruit trees hit at the same time as going back to work. Then it's a mad dash of canning, freezing and drying til I drop...

  4. Thank you for the name of my affliction. With all the rain our vegetable garden is late. My mother and aunt do not understand why I would can pinto beans. In 2008 my husband and I canned 267 quarts of green beans. That was our first year. We will not come close to that number again. Happy day from middle TN!

  8. As always, a wonderful post. Very funny and TRUE! I miss my little garden [such as it was] but we won't have one until next year. As it is I think we live in the land of "Pick Your Own" and awesome farmers markets, so I do have that.

I am still trying to find a dehydrater inspired by you. I miss jerky if nothing else.

Take care. I miss you, and sorry I haven't been around for a while, but life, eh? Hugs SciFi. You are the best. :)

    1. Skippy!! So happy to see you "out and about". I've read about your internet woes. Sucks for sure.

Hey, the next best thing to growing stuff yourself is to be able to go pick some up from a local! There's always next year for a garden!

Thanks so much for stopping by Skippy. I know things are difficult right now and that makes your visit even more special.
      Much love,
      Sci
