We have a charc...My husband and I grill out a lot. We have a charcoal/wood grill, most of our wood comes from our yard or folks on Craigslist wanting to get rid of cut down trees. It saves a lot on energy bills. Food taste better to me too. Cast Iron cooking is a hobby of ours now. We also hand wash our dishes too. Its only about 2 gallons of water to wash and 2 gallons to rinse, 4 gallons total...it beats the 6 gallons that our dish washer uses. Now I do know that EnergyStar dishwashers use only 4 gallons but by not using the dish washer at all Im also reducing my power usage by 1.59 kWh. When we do use the dishwasher...big family events such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter, I turn off the "heated dry" button. It saves on a little bit of energy...every little bit helps and adds up quickly.

We also use whats called a Gray Watering system for my garden. It sounded weird at first but after getting it all installed (my husband did it himself) it has cut my water bill in half. We also raise rabbits and chickens (in the city too) for our meat. We very rarely ever buy meat. Housing rabbits and a small amount of chickens is pretty easy, but I recommend researching these things before actually doing it.

With our children we use Thread Up, a site that you can post kids' outgrown clothes and for $5 + shipping I am able to get them new-ish stuff that's the right size. For activities we utilize free days at the zoo or children museum.

Grocery shopping, I only grocery shop when i have at least 10 items on my list, all the added trips for one item here, 2 items there all adds up...so I wait till I have at least 10 items on my list before making a trip.

For bulk purchases I sometimes split the cost with other family members. Sam's Club is awesome but some of the items are in too large of a bulk for me to keep...so, my sisters family, my parents, and my family split the cost on a lot of perishable items. We all save a lot of money that way

This one may sound a bit extreme but its dropped my utility bills down by at least 1/3...insulate the hot water heater. Most hot water heaters (unless an energystar) stay on all day long and the water heater is working to keep that water at the temp you have it set at (120 degrees f). Put an insulating blanket or the like around the hot water heater so the temp stays regular. Also, I have started turning the hot water heater off completely after baths have been taken, kids are at school, and the rest of us are at work. It gets turned back on in the evening.
